"This book and the exhibition it accompanies are devoted to photography in Britain during the 1980s. Unlike previous surveys of art in what is often referred to as ‘Thatcher’s Britain’, The 80s: Photographing Britain is the first to examine the multiplicities of photography during this period. Of the seventy photographers included, many were inspired by the activism of the period’s protest and civil rights movements. Others used photography as a conceptual tool with which to challenge the mediums relationship to truth, or embraced the latest artistic developments and technologies to offer fresh insights into life in Britain. Working across the UK, they all recognised the camera’s ability to change narratives and provide new ways of looking at their subject.” – Alex Farquharson, Director Tate Britain
